Storytelling

Greenlandic storytelling

Is the title of one of the short films about arctic designers.

Nauja Lyngesen wants to show Greenland as a place where industry and commerce build on the special tradition of legend and storytelling. And also show the unique natural resources and landscape of Greenland. The wild and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice, combine to present a memorable natural spectacle. With justification, Greenland has been called one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Nauja tells the story about her Greenlandic background, which is reflected both in products and sales. She is grandchild of the Greenlandic painter Hans Lynge, and great-grandchild of Henrik Lund who wrote the national anthem of Greenland. Thus, it is also about how she found the beauty and pride in her Greenlandic background.

The story draws attention to Greenlandic design and offers a view into a fantastic universe with unique experiences and ,of course, shows many aspects of the background to the arctic designers collection.

Greenlandic values, such as peace, origin and sincerity have a great appeal in modern society. We like products which take time to make and understand well that handmade goods are a little more expensive, not least if it is helping to develop local industry and provide work to help women develop their skills and benefit local communities.

Arctic designers, consciously, challenge the negative image of Greenland into something attractive. Artic designers associates itself with the traditional Greenland and shows new ways of using previously wasted resources in modern ways within the framework of traditional Greenlandic design.

“In Greenland, you will come closest to the traditional way of life of the Greenland hunter. Hunting and, to some degree, fishing are the main trades of the area. Every part of the animal is used. The meat is traditionally used as food for both people and dogs, whilst the sealskins are used for clothing and items such as bags and belts”.

In the future, Nauja will also focus on Greenlandic shark skin.
